GOP Congressman Resigns After Asking Two Female Staffers To Have His Baby

GOP Congressman Resigns After Asking Two Female Staffers To Have His Baby

Republican Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona said Thursday he is resigning next month after revealing that he discussed surrogacy with two female staffers. "After discussing options with my family, we came to the conclusion that the best thing for our family now would be for me to tender my previous resignation effective today, December 8th, 2017", Franks said in an emailed statement.

Franks said in his statement that had never "physically intimidated, coerced, or had, or attempted to have, any sexual contact with any member of my congressional staff".

"Due to my familiarity and experience with the process of surrogacy, I clearly became insensitive as to how the discussion of such an intensely personal topic might affect others", said Franks, who was first elected to Congress in 2002.

The eight-term Arizona lawmaker abruptly resigned Friday, bowing to an ultimatum from Speaker Paul Ryan. After having twins with a surrogate, the couple sought additional children, he said. Al Franken, D-Minn., announced earlier Thursday he intends to step down soon after multiple women claimed Franken tried to kiss them or inappropriately touch them.

"We're trying to get that done before the holidays, over the next few weeks", Alderman said.

The rear window, which doubles as a wind deflector, also is altered, allowing it to be closed or opened separately from the roof. The i8 roadster features a fabric soft top that can open or close in less than 16 seconds, at speeds up to 31 miles per hour .

Andrea Lafferty, President of Traditional Values Coalition, said she is the one who reported Franks' conduct to the speaker's office.

Upon leaving the House floor on Thursday, Trent was consoled by fellow Republican members, including Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., and Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.

Franks' departure comes just days after Democratic Representative John Conyers of MI announced his immediate retirement amid sexual harassment allegations that he has denied.

Ryan says he presented the allegations to Franks, which he did not deny, and told Franks he would refer the allegations to the House Ethics Committee. He serves on the House Judiciary and Armed Services committees.
