British woman jailed for THREE years for bringing painkillers into Egypt

British woman jailed for THREE years for bringing painkillers into Egypt

British woman Laura Plummer has been jailed for three years for after flying into Egypt carrying 300 prohibited painkillers for her husband's bad back.

The 33-year-old shopkeeper, Laura Plummer, was arrested on October 9 after police found close to 300 pills of Tramadol packed in her luggage at Egypt's Hurghada International Airport, according to the BBC. She is said to have been taking 29 sheets of the medicinal to her Egyptian husband Omar, who suffers from back pain caused by an accident.

Her mother Roberta Sinclair had travelled to Egypt for the Boxing Day hearing which had been adjourned from Christmas Day because Laura was too upset.

Osman argued that this mistranslation made it look as though Plummer had pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, "but she didn't", he said. Plummer's family is to lodge an appeal against the sentence, but Rachel Plummer said it was not clear whether the appeal would be heard on Tuesday.

"He did not even know she was bringing them".

The shop worker added she had been given the tablets by a colleague and had just been "daft" by putting them in her suitcase before travelling.

"We're just hoping. Even half of that would be better - anything less than three years".

Mike Pence reschedules Middle East visit for January
In October, Pence's office said the vice president was schedule to make a stop in the occupied West Bank during the visit. Sissi agreed to still meet with Pence, although his decision to do so was deeply unpopular in Egypt.

"I am hopeful that good sense will eventually prevail", he told BBC Radio 4's The World At One.

Her family say Laura will now be taken to Qena prison - about an hour's drive north of Luxor - where inmates sleep in cells with no bed and only blankets. "It's hard and I can't believe it after waiting for two months", she told the BBC. It is understood that she has been convicted of possessing illegal drugs.

Her father, Nevile Plummer, said his daughter's hair had started falling out due to stress. "Anything less than three years".

She said: "My mum's obviously devastated. She doesn't deserve that", Rachel told the BBC.

Her other sister Jayne Synclair said Plummer had only been trying to help her partner. She's out there by herself.

The family's local MP Karl Turner said: "I think it's a damning indictment about good sense and fair play". He said the court could also not prove she brought them into the country to sell them.
