At Hanukkah reception, Trump basks in warmth of his Jerusalem recognition

Those in opposition to Trump's move contest the US's genuine commitment to the peace process, arguing instead that the Jerusalem declaration has "destroyed" the two state solution, further removing the possibility of the U.S. performing its longstanding role as an impartial mediator.

Every former president before Trump who made it their campaign promise to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital failed to deliver.

This year's event came one day after Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and directed the State Department to prepare for moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - a campaign that both he and several former had made but which has remained unimplemented.

"The miracle of Hanukkah is the miracle of Israel", he said. "We are proud to stand with the people of Israel and renew our enduring bond".

The crowd at the event did not include any Democratic members of Congress or leaders of the Reform Movement, and many of those in attendance were Orthodox Jewish supporters of the President. "You do have faith and you do have resilience", Trump said.

"And right now I'm thinking about what's going on and the love that's all over Israel and all about Jerusalem", he added. Beside them was his daughter Ivanka and her husband, senior adviser Jared Kushner, and the president's grandchildren, whom he noted are Jewish.

Trump struggled with the pronunciation of Soloveichik's name. And Soloveichik recited a traditional prayer that he said has additional meaning this year.

Mr. Trump capped off his speech by introducing Louise Lawrence-Israels, a Holocaust survivor who lived the first three years of her life in an attic in Amsterdam.
