Uber says 2.7m Brits hit by breach that was covered up

Uber says 2.7m Brits hit by breach that was covered up

"The order also requires Uber to implement a comprehensive program to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the personal information it collects and maintains".

According to Uber, the 2.7 million figure is "approximate rather than an accurate and definitive account" - this is because the information gathered by the firm's app does not always specify where users live. It left their names, email addresses, and mobile phone numbers exposed. Now, after some further digging, it seems that 2.7 million of those affected were Uber customers from the UK.

Dipple-Johnstone said the ICO expected Uber to begin to inform those affected as soon as possible, and reiterated that the NCSC, alongside other relevant United Kingdom authorities, was continuing to work to ensure the data of United Kingdom citizens was protected. "However, its use may make other scams, such as bogus emails or calls appear more credible", ICO Deputy Commissioner James Dipple-Johnstone said.

"We have seen no evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident", Uber said. People should continue to be vigilant and follow the advice from the NCSC.

Amid reports that Uber paid hackers $100,000 to delete customer information that was obtained in a data breach, a group of senators raised questions on Monday about the alleged breach and the company's response.

Separately, prosecutors in the U.S. have heard that Uber may have hired ex-CIA intelligence operatives to conduct surveillance on its rivals.

Uber recently landed in trouble because 57 million of its users had been hacked, and the company spent a bunch of money to deliberately hide that fact from the rest of the world. "Nevertheless, the nature of the information now acknowledged to have been compromised, together with the allegation that the company concealed the breach without notifying affected drivers and consumers, and prior privacy concerns at Uber, makes this a serious incident that merits further scrutiny".

It also notes that Uber has run into trouble before for failing to notify users. The trial, brought by Alphabet-owned Waymo, centres on allegations that Uber stole autonomous vehicle technology trade secrets from it.
