Uber Hack 'Raises Huge Concerns' With UK Data Regulator

Uber Hack 'Raises Huge Concerns' With UK Data Regulator

According to Bloomberg, the hackers were able to steal the information by breaking into the accounts of two Uber engineers by using the GitHub coding site.

Two members of the Uber information security team who "led the response" that included not alerting users that their data was breached were let go from the San Francisco-based company effective Tuesday, according to Khosrowshahi.

Uber's chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi (pictured) explained in a release that the hackers found 57 million names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers, in which around 600,000 drivers in the pool had their names and license details exposed. He was not at the helm when it happened.

As the United Kingdom data protection regulator has opened an investigation into the hack of customer and driver data at Uber, the maximum penalty could be about £500,000 ($662,350, €563,000) under current British law for organizations that fail to notify affected users and regulators when data breaches occur.

So how does the Uber hack stack up against other recent data breaches?

The company's admission that it failed to disclose the breach came as Uber was seeking to recover from a series of crises that culminated in the Mr Kalanick's ousting in June.

Earlier in 2016, the company reached a settlement with the NY attorney general requiring it to take steps to be more vigilant about protecting the information that its app stores about its riders. It was also revealed that license numbers of drivers which were stolen will be offered free identity theft protection and credit monitoring. Uber says no Social Security numbers or location data was involved. "None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", Khosrowshahi said. Regulatory authorities were being notified, the company added.

As well as trouble potentially brewing in Cali over the hush up, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has also launched an investigation into Uber's cockup - by our reckoning, perhaps only the fifth worse thing the controversial bad-boy biz has done over the past year. But viewing this data breach cover up as an incident that only Uber could commit misses the writing on the wall. "We are changing the way we do business". "What I learned, particularly around our failure to notify affected individuals or regulators previous year, has prompted me to take several actions", Khosrowshahi stated in a blog post. "Interestingly here it's the fact that Uber covered up the breach that seems to have got people's backs up, clearly showing how important honesty is when dealing with such incidents".
