Sessions mulling second special counsel to investigate Republican concerns, letter shows

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions acknowledged on Tuesday he was aware of contact between Donald Trump's election campaign and Russian intermediaries, again modifying a previous statement about the extent of connections to Moscow.

And he said that though he did not initially recall a March 2016 conversation with Papadopoulos, he now believes after seeing media reports about it that he told Papadopoulos that he was not authorized to represent the Trump campaign with the Russian government or any other foreign government.

Sessions will likely face questions regarding his knowledge of conversations between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, such as those described in the statement by George Papdopoulos, which wasn't released to the public until after Sessions' Senate hearing. Sessions referenced a perjury case of a young police officer he prosecuted even though the officer corrected the record later. "But, honestly, they should be looking at the Democrats".

Under questioning by Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, Sessions said "that would be wrong".

Sessions sought to explain away apparent contradictions in his public statements by portraying President Donald Trump's campaign as an exhausting operation and said he could not be expected to remember specific encounters from more than a year ago.

"My answers have not changed", Sessions said.

Asked by Jordan what it would take to get a special counsel investigation into the dossier or various Clinton-related accusations, Sessions pointed to department policies on the procedure, as well as to the fact that there has only been two special counsel investigations.

US Mom Says Spacey Assaulted Son, Police Investigating
The mounting allegations caused Netflix to cut ties with the actor and suspend production on its sixth season indefinitely. Given the "climate", Unruh said her son recently filed a police report, adding that a criminal investigation was underway.

Papadopoulos was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and pleaded guilty to lying to authorities about his own foreign contacts during the campaign.

What if Sessions says he forgot about Papadopoulos' remarks?

The New York Times reported that the letter "appeared to be a direct response to Mr. Trump's statement on November 3, when he said he was disappointed with his beleaguered attorney general, Jeff Sessions, and that longstanding unproven allegations about the Clintons and the Obama administration should be investigated". "He's bold and direct about what he says, people elected him, but we do our duty every day based on law and facts". Sleep was in short supply.

A prosecutor could use circumstantial evidence to undermine such a defence, lawyers said.

"A President can not improperly influence an investigation", Sessions said.

Who could prosecute Sessions for perjury?

Mueller III was appointed in May as a special counsel to investigate the Russia-Trump campaign electoral collusion conspiracy theory peddled by the Left to undermine the Trump administration.
