Saudis destroy Houthi missile near Riyadh's Khaled airport

Saudi Arabia says its forces have intercepted a missile fired toward one of its major worldwide airports on the outskirts of the capital, Riyadh.

It was shot down by Saudi air defence forces, with fragments of the missile landing in an uninhabited area north of the capital.

Unconfirmed footage uploaded to Twitter appeared to show a volley of at least three missiles being fired from the ground at an undetermined location in Riyadh.

Al Arabiya TV reported the missile was sacked from Yemen and was brought down close to the capital by Saudi air defence forces.

"The rocket landed on the airport campus and did not cause any significant damage".

Passengers there reported hearing a large explosion and said they saw black smoke billowing in the distance.

Manchester United star David de Gea reportedly did not receive a single vote in FIFA's Best Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Saudi military forces have intercepted missiles fired from Houthis several times since March 2015, when a Saudi-led coalition launched a war against Houthi rebels and their allies after they captured northern Yemen and ousted the Saudi-backed president from power.

The Saudi-led alliance said the strikes unleashed on Wednesday had hit a "legitimate military target" of rebels in the area.

The Saudis, who back Yemen's internationally recognised government, accuse the Houthis of starting the war.

Some, including the authors of a United Nations report, have accused the Saudis of causing devastation and the deaths of thousands, as a result of their involvement in the war.
