Russia vetoes UN resolution on chemical weapons probe in Syria

Russia vetoes UN resolution on chemical weapons probe in Syria

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday urged all members of the U.N. Security Council to back the renewal of the global inquiry into chemical weapons attacks in Syria, saying it was needed to prevent President Bashar al-Assad from using the arms, Reuters reports.

It remained unclear whether Russian Federation would veto the US-drafted measure, which would be the 10th time that Moscow has used its veto power at the council to block action targeting its Syrian ally.

Russian Federation and the US have failed to resolve a dispute over extending the mandate of a UN-backed investigative team that blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces for a chemical weapons attack in April that killed more than 80 people.

Russia, along with Iran, is the key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Moscow's military intervention inside Syria is widely seen as tipping the balance in the conflict. The Russian OPCW envoy, Alexander Shulgin, said a week ago that the investigation in fact is particularly "skewed" towards one theory behind the chemical attack in Syria's Idlib province that took place in April.

"Everyone in the Security Council would be shooting ourselves in the foot if we allowed that to happen", he said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations said late Monday that "Russia is mouthing words of support for JIM renewal, but those words are not backed up by any actions".

If the elder Flynn is indicted, it would be the first charges brought against someone who worked in the Trump White House. If he is charged, Mr Flynn would be the fourth person to face prosecution as part of Mr Mueller's investigation.

The 4 April sarin attack on Khan Sheikhoun that killed dozens of people prompted the United States to launch missiles on a Syrian air base. A resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the United States, France, Russia, Britain or China to be adopted.

"Let there be no doubt: we have unleashed a monster here", said Delattre.

Syria agreed to destroy its chemical weapons in 2013 under a deal brokered by Russian Federation and the United States.

The mandate for the joint inquiry by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which found the Syrian government used the banned nerve agent sarin in an April 4 attack, expires at midnight Thursday.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said he opposed the USA measure because it was "geared toward entrenching the inherent flaws of the JIM" and did nothing to improve its work.

While Russia agreed to the 2015 creation of the JIM, it has consistently questioned its findings, which also concluded that the Syrian government used chlorine as a weapon several times.
