Microsoft announces significant extension of its Redmond campus

Microsoft announces significant extension of its Redmond campus

Microsoft's Redmond campus, which opened in 1986, now totals 15 million square feet in 125 buildings. But unlike Amazon, it doesn't need a second headquarters in order to excel.

"We are not only creating a world-class work environment to help retain and attract the best and brightest global talent, but also building a campus that our neighbors can enjoy, and that we can build in a fiscally smart way with low environmental impact", says Microsoft. Cars will be stored in an underground parking facility. With the added square footage, the campus' space will be the equivalent of 180 football fields.

The construction of the new campus should require 2,500 construction and development jobs, and Smith explained that it should be a boon for the Puget Sound area.

Microsoft's local commitment, however, remains.

Microsoft's video shows how the campus will develop and what it will feature. (Construction is expected to begin next fall.) Microsoft has some 47,000 employees in the region now.

Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, will be redesigned and renovated over the next seven years to add space for up to 8,000 new employees, the company announced Wednesday. "Neighboring a vibrant urban core, suburban towns, lakes, mountains, and miles of forest, it's one of Microsoft's crown jewels". And as we continue to grow and look to create the best workplace in the tech sector, Microsoft will invest right here in Redmond, our home for more than 30 years. There are also plans for a local light rail to take workers to and from locations around the campus.

The extension of Microsoft's Redmond campus is a reflection of the company's recent growth, and it also follows other redevelopment projects at Microsoft's offices in Vancouver BC and London. They were designed both to maximize the number of individual closed-door offices with windows-giving engineers of the day privacy and quiet in which to crunch code-and to be easily subdivided and leased to other tenants if the speculative software venture of the mid-1980s didn't pan out. However, with the new buildings, the company plans to take a different approach. In a two-minute video, Microsoft lays out its plan to raze existing buildings, and completely overhaul the 500-acre space with 18 new buildings, jogging and walking trails, retail space, and even a cricket field.
