BMW i8 Roadster unveiled alongside Coupe update

BMW i8 Roadster unveiled alongside Coupe update

BMW claims a 0-62 miles per hour (100 km/h) time of 4.6 seconds for the i8 Roadster, with the i8 Coupe's time pegged at 4.4 seconds. Also included is new technology such as BMW's controversial "display key" as well as the latest iDrive infotainment system.

It uses a mid-mounted version of BMW's turbocharged 1.5L 3-cyl. gasoline engine packaged behind the cabin in combination with an electric motor housed within the front axle assembly in a set-up that conceivably can provide either front-wheel drive running on the electric motor or all-wheel drive with the gasoline engine and electric motor working together. Styling-wise, it looks very similar to the coupé but features many individual highlights, beginning with the electrically operated soft-top roof which fully retracts into the rear end for a targa look.

The 2019 BMW i8 Coupe and Roadster feature multiple driving modes that include Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro that adjust how the vehicle drives and feels.

The auto can switch from a coupe to a roadster in just 15 seconds and at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph).

Interestingly enough, it stows in a perpendicular position behind the passengers. The i8 roadster features a fabric soft top that can open or close in less than 16 seconds, at speeds up to 31 miles per hour. The lithium-ion battery cell capacity is up from 20 to 34 Ah. The rear window, which doubles as a wind deflector, also is altered, allowing it to be closed or opened separately from the roof. Thanks to an improved high-voltage battery the i8 can now cover a claimed 55km on electric power alone, although you'd be lucky to get even close to that in real world driving.

The 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine is said to produce a sportier soundtrack but continues to deliver 231 hp and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque.

The 2019 i8 Roadster doesn't look that different from the coupe, other than the different top and the fact that the two rear seats have been removed.

The two-seat drop-top has been shown alongside a facelift for the i8 Coupe; both models share almost everything from the 374hp hybrid powertrain and new design to the interiors and features.

A boost of power to 369 horsepower means zero-to-100 km/h times now dwell in 4.6-second area for the Roadster, and around 4.4 for the coupe. That almost doubles the amount of storage available in the Roadster versus the i8 Coupe.
