Barack Obama Shows Up in Chicago for Jury Duty; Not Chosen

Former President Barack Obama reported for jury duty in Chicago on Wednesday but was ultimately dismissed from the pool.

Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans told reporters around noon that Obama wouldn't be serving.

"Look at this. Did you know I was coming?" he asked one man who held a copy of Obama's "Dreams From My Father". But he was not picked to serve as a juror. As happens most days, would-be jurors brought books, but on Wednesday some people brought books Obama had authored in hopes he might sign them.

Obama was seen shaking hands once he arrived in the building.

"The Former president was here at our invitation", Evans said.

Obama still owns a home at 51st and Greenwood, and is registered to vote in Chicago, although he and his family live in D.C.

Theoretically, every US citizen over the age of 18 could be called for jury duty.

Mr Obama is not the first U.S. president to show up for service that some Americans either dread or find excuses to avoid.

Obama, who now resides in Washington, D.C., has been active in various endeavors for his new Obama Foundation, and has also teamed with the other living former presidents in raising money for hurricane victims in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

For his troubles, Obama is in line to receive $17.20 - the daily rate of pay for performing this civic duty. In 2004, media titan Oprah Winfrey, who at the time produced her talk show out of the midwestern city, was a juror on a three-day murder trial ending in a conviction.
