Arab League affirms solidarity with KSA's security measures

Arab foreign ministers gathered at the League's headquarters in Cairo Sunday for an emergency meeting called by Saudi Arabia.

Anticipating confrontation at the Cairo meeting, Lebanon's foreign minister may not attend, though a final decision will be taken on Sunday morning, a senior Lebanese official told Reuters on Saturday.

Addressing the Arab foreign ministers' meeting, Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said: "Showing leniency toward Iran will not leave any Arab capital safe from those ballistic missiles".

"Iran s biggest arm in the region at the moment is the terrorist Hezbollah arm", Sheikh Khalid charged.

Saudi Arabia accuses Hezbollah of a role in the launching of a missile at Riyadh from Yemen this month.

Saudi Arabia, added Al-Jubeir, will not stand idly by in the face of Iran's "blatant aggression".

This month alone, Saudi Arabia and its allies have accused Iran of having a hand in the attempted Houthi missile attack on Riyadh; an alleged Hezbollah assassination plot that supposedly compelled pro-Saudi Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri to flee to Saudi Arabia and resign amid unclear circumstances; and an explosion and fire at a major oil pipeline in Bahrain.

The Arab League accused Hezballah of "supporting terrorism and extremist groups in Arab countries with advanced weapons and ballistic missiles", in its declaration.

"We say it in clear terms that Iranian threats have exceeded all boundaries and are pushing the region toward the abyss", said Aboul-Gheit.

Earlier in the day, Iran's foreign Minister Javad Zarif told state media in Antalya, a Turkish resort city, on the sidelines of a meeting with his Russian and Trukish counterparts, "Unfortunately countries like the Saudi regime are pursuing divisions and creating differences and because of this they don't see any results other than divisions".

The Cairo meeting was not attended by Lebanese foreign minister Gerban Basil.

Hezballah is part of the coalition government in Lebanese government.

In statements posted on Twitter, Aoun said Lebanon could not be held "responsible" for regional conflicts.

While IS no longer controls any urban hub in Iraq, its surviving fighters have regrouped in remote desert areas along the border with Syria and mopping up operations remain to be completed. These groups were allegedly supported by Saudi Arabia, US and Israel.

They also demanded Hezbollah stop intervening in regional conflicts and spreading extremism and sectarianism.

A source close to Hariri said that meeting aimed to "continue the series of Arab and worldwide consultations".
