Apple's AR headset progressing towards a 2020 release

Apple's AR headset progressing towards a 2020 release

Apple is also considering launching an App Store specifically for the headset. Microsoft's HoloLens, for example, is available as a development kit, but we're still no closer to seeing the consumer version than we were when it was revealed two years ago. The company wants to have technology for a headset ready by 2019, and sell it as early as 2020, according to the report. Well, Bloomberg is out with a fresh report this morning that corroborates that potential timeline, saying that the Mac maker is indeed targeting 2020 to ship the forthcoming AR product, while the underlying technology should be ready around 2019. Augmented reality (AR) is a form of VR that blends virtual objects into real world settings. You can add Apple to the list as well, and not just because of fancy camera technologies in its newest iPhones.

The in-house chip would have a similar design to what's now in the Apple Watch, which allows for more components in a smaller area.

All signs point toward Apple ramping up its push into the AR sphere. The standalone AR headset will reportedly feature a new chip and run a custom operating system based on iOS, internally dubbed "rOS" - short for "reality operating system".

Apple engineers are reportedly experimenting with ways to interact with the headset, either by voice, touch, or head gestures.

However, during his interview with The Independent, Cook said he wasn't concerned about "being first".

Tourists will be banned from climbing Australia's UIuru
The Central Land Council (CLC), who represents Aboriginal people in Central Australia, welcomed the move. The latest statistics showed just 16 per cent of tourists climb Uluru, paving the way for the closure.

The limitation today is that we have to hold our smartphone or tablet up to our face to experience AR. Aetna workers are co-located at Apple's offices in Cupertino, he said, as the company looks to have a variety of apps ready in time for the January 1 start of the Apple Watch pilot program. "There's virtual reality and there's augmented reality-both of these are incredibly interesting".

In the gap between now and release, Apple apparently intends to release a new version of ARKit with better software tools that make AR development much easier next year.

Bloomberg's sources don't shed any light on how the end user will control Apple's AR headset, mostly because Apple itself hasn't figured out a control method yet. A mass-usable prototype does not seem to have arrived yet, though; the report says that Apple is using HTC Vive headsets and an in-house design that uses an iPhone screen to test some aspects of the technology. Googles headset unlike Apples will focus on education and medical uses.

"We're already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn", he said in the most recent call.
