Trump threatens to challenge media's broadcast licenses

His missive came shortly after he vehemently denied an NBC News report that he asked to dramatically expand the USA nuclear arsenal.

President Trump again slammed NBC News on Wednesday, this time after a new report alleged Trump wanted a "tenfold increase" to the USA nuclear arsenal.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday dismissed a report that said he wants to increase the country's nuclear stockpile by a factor of ten, accusing the press of making it up entirely.

His comments "came in response to a briefing slide he was shown that charted the steady reduction of US nuclear weapons since the late 1960s". That came just over a month after Trump responded to a North Korean missile test by telling reporters that if the regime of Kim Jong-un issues further threats, the USA will retaliate with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

"Trump indicated he wanted a bigger stockpile, not the bottom position on that downward-sloping curve", NBC reported.

"What I'm concerned about is that this president, and I hear this from people who did not vote for him and from people who don't always cover him fully and fairly either, but there is a concern that they literally have never seen a president covered this way", she said, arguing his tweets about policy get less coverage than his bombastic ones. Officials briefly explained the legal and practical impediments to a nuclear buildup and how the current military posture is stronger than it was at the height of the build-up.

The July 20 meeting came a day after another one that left national security officials stunned.

It was after this meeting, NBC notes, that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly called Trump a "fucking moron".

Mr Trump was quick to denounce the latest NBC story in an early morning tweet: "Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a "tenfold" increase in our US nuclear arsenal".

However, Trump took to Twitter Wednesday and denied the allegations, saying it's "pure fiction, made up to demean".

He followed up nearly immediately with his veiled threat to strip NBC of their licence.

"The press should speak more honestly", he continued.

The Federal Communications Commission oversees the renewal of licenses for broadcasters.

Trump's reported desire for a dramatic expansion of America's nuclear arsenal comes at a time of heightening tensions between the United States and North Korea.

"The insanity and folly of this of course can not be overstated", the director for Disarmament and Threat Reduction Policy at the Arms Control Association, Kingston Reif, tweeted in response to the NBC report.
