Trump set to meet Queen in downgraded United Kingdom visit

Trump set to meet Queen in downgraded United Kingdom visit

The ongoing controversy over whether President Donald Trump will be heading to Britain to meet Queen Elizabeth took a new turn on Wednesday.

That plan was then put on hold this summer after Mr Trump reportedly spoke to Mrs May on the phone and said he didn't want his trip marred by protests.

When diplomats are visiting as part of a state visit, they typically stay at Buckingham Palace.

Donald Trump will visit Britain early next year, but it will be a "working visit" rather than a state visit, it has been reported.

The fact that the government still doesn't dare to schedule the full state visit is a sign of the strength of opposition to Trump in the UK.

May's offer of a State Visit, an honour usually reserved for USA presidents in their second term, sparked mass protests and a petition calling for its cancellation.

Nonetheless, he anxious that the new rules would set a precedent for undermining basic health benefits required under federal law. The American Civil Liberties Union filed such a lawsuit less than three hours after the rules were issued.

Prime Minister Theresa May's office declined to comment on the visit, and said its position on the state visit had not changed.

It was immediately criticised as a breach of convention, as state visits are usually reserved for a president's second term.

London mayor Sadiq Khan - who has clashed with Mr Trump on Twitter - said he "would not object" to a working visit.

Almost 200 MPs signed an early motion opposing Mr Trump addressing both houses of Parliament, with Speaker John Bercow voicing his opposition to his visit during a session in the House of Commons.

The first real clue that the planned State Visit would not be going ahead in 2017 came in the Queen's Speech in June.

A state visit for the USA president is usually an honour for their second term. Mr Trump said that Britain would be at the front of the queue for a trade deal with the United States after Brexit as he accepted the invitation in Washington in January.
