Trump guts Obamacare's contraceptive mandate

Trump guts Obamacare's contraceptive mandate

The Act required employer-provided health insurance policies to include coverage for preventative care, including birth control using all contraceptive methods approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

The administration has issued a long-expected revision to Obama-era rules.

"With this rule, the Trump administration is taking direct aim at birth control coverage for more than 62 million women", Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president for Planned Parenthood, said in a statement. The American Civil Liberties Union filed such a lawsuit less than three hours after the rules were issued.

The action by the Trump administration is nearly certain to spark fresh litigation.

Birth control should be free, but instead the Trump administration is reportedly about to make it even harder for some women to obtain. The new guidelines, which are expected to provide many more contraceptive coverage exemptions, could be announced as early as Friday. "It not only allows women to plan and space their pregnancies in a way that is best for their health and their families, but also helps manage a variety of health conditions".

Non-profit groups and for-profit businesses that are not publicly-traded can also apply for an exemption to the mandate based on moral, but not religious, objections to it.

The ACA's guarantee of coverage for FDA-approved contraceptives without out-of-pocket costs stands as one of the most important advancements in women's health in a generation. They created a workaround for those organizations: employers who objected to the coverage would notify the administration, which would then work directly with the insurance company to make sure the coverage was provided without the employer needing to be involved.

Russell Westbrook's mega-contract could impact his decision on future — Paul George
Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same. After all, from a financial perspective, there may be no more reason for Westbrook to hold out on signing the contract extension.

Nonetheless, he anxious that the new rules would set a precedent for undermining basic health benefits required under federal law.

Until now, a fairly limited number of employers - mainly churches and some other religious entities - could get an exemption to the mandate. The administration acknowledges that the law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, "does not provide protection for nonreligious, moral conscientious objections". The court ordered both sides into negotiations for dealing with the legitimate religious objections of nuns to birth control, but the new regulations will certainly cover their moral objections if not their religious beliefs.

Employers who argued the "contraceptive mandate" infringed on their religious liberties lodged U.S. Supreme Court challenges, winning exemptions in cases brought by the Hobby Lobby craft store chain and the Little Sisters of the Poor religious order.

"The Trump administration's decision today is yet another attack on American women, including the 99 percent of American women who have used birth control at some point in their lives-and especially the 54 percent of Black and 57 percent of Latina women between the ages of 18-34 who have struggled to afford contraception", Thomas said.

"No American should be forced to violate his or her own conscience in order to abide by the laws and regulations governing our health care system", Caitlin Oakley, Health and Human Services press secretary, said in a statement.

The new exemptions will be available to colleges and universities that provide health insurance to students as well as employees.

"HHS leaders under the current administration are focused on turning back the clock on women's health", said the organization's president, Dr. Haywood Brown.
