Tim Cahill-led Australia sees off fearless Syria

Tim Cahill-led Australia sees off fearless Syria

Tuesday night's Tim Cahill show gave the national team a 2-1 second-leg win over Syria that sealed the team's spot in an intercontinental play-off against the fourth-place team CONCACAF nation for a place in Russian Federation.

Australia will next month face the fourth-placed team from the Concacaf section - now Panama - across two legs for a place at the World Cup.

In the second leg against Australia, Syria took an early lead with Omar Al Somah's goal in 6th minute but it lasted short as Australia's Tim Cahill scored an equaliser just after six minutes.

Tim Cahill scored twice in the extra time win to keep the team's World Cup hopes alive.

"It doesn't matter who we play next".

Having made his worldwide debut for Australia in 2004, a 37-year-old Tim Cahill scored his 49th and 50th goal for the Socceroos in today's World Cup playoff against Syria.

Neither side could tip the balance in their favour in normal time, but 37-year-old Cahill ensured Australia's progression with his 50th worldwide goal.

Syria supporters were in tears inside the ANZ Stadium.

Who else but Cahill could come up with such heroics?

With the visitors seemingly holding out for penalties, their task was not made any easier when Mahmoud Al Mawas was sent off only a few minutes into the allotted 30.

In the last five matches, Australia has won one match against Thailand, lost one match against Japan and three matches ended in a draw with Syria, Chile, and Cameroon.

"I'm proud of everything we have done together and how we can help kids watching to follow their dreams", Cahill said afterwards - a man inspiring those on and off the field.

As the first half continued both sides had their chances, but with the introduction of Aaron Mooy to the central midfield in the 10th minute, after being left out of the starting line up, the Aussies immediately began to dominate possession and control the game.

The Terriers midfielder started on the bench but was introduced after just 10 minutes after Bournemouth utility man Brad Smith picked up a suspected hip injury.

Australia only needed a draw to qualify. With our respect for your national team and country.
