Russell Westbrook's mega-contract could impact his decision on future — Paul George

Russell Westbrook's mega-contract could impact his decision on future — Paul George

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook signed a five-year extension with the team Friday, months after the Thunder initially made the monster offer.

After Kevin Durant's departure, the Thunder worked creatively to find elite teammates for Westbrook, who averaged a triple-double last season (36.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 10.4 assists) on his way to winning Most Valuable Player.

Twitter dwellers noticed and celebrated an interesting coincidence - that the Westbrook-Thunder deal was finalized on Durant's 29th birthday.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Paul George had no inside information. With rumors swirling about Westbrook potentially being swayed to leave in free agency next summer, people were rightfully nervous.

The deal, which begins at the start of the 2018/19 season, gives Westbrook the largest guaranteed contract in National Basketball Association history and sets him up to earn $233m (£174m) over the next six seasons.

The NBA's insane offseason continues. If Westbrook and Anthony are committed to staying, coupled with a successful season, George's decision becomes tougher. Russell Westbrook is ideal.

Italian antitrust authority to investigate Ryanair over mass cancellations
It is expected that pilots at Dublin and Stansted - Ryanair's two biggest bases - will issue demands to management later today. He again apologised for the disruption, which he said was down to mismanagement of the pilots' rostering system.

Westbrook now joins two-time MVP Stephen Curry as the only players to have agreed to new contracts valued at $200-plus million.

The deal signed Friday begins with the 2018-2019 season.

The Thunder have a much brighter future ahead of them than they had just a couple of weeks ago.

By Mayor Mick Cornett's official proclamation: From this day forward, Every Day is Russell Westbrook Day.

After all, from a financial perspective, there may be no more reason for Westbrook to hold out on signing the contract extension. Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same. Serving as an offensive force for the Thunder, Westbrook finished the year with a record-breaking 42 triple-doubles, breaking legend Oscar Robertson's previous mark.

Westbrook will prove he is worth the large sum of money on the court.
