In the United States, a powerful explosion occurred

An explosion hit an oil platform on Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana Sunday night, injuring seven people and possibly leaving one person unaccounted for.

The Times-Picayune is reporting that an oil rig exploded in Lake Pontchartrain on Sunday evening near St. Charles Parish and north Kenner.

The Coast Guard told CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV the missing person is a ma.

The Clovelly Oil Co. platform exploded Sunday night while maintenance was being done on the structure, sending a fireball high into the night sky, authorities and company officials said. And although nobody has yet died, police officials on scene say numerous injuries were serious.

Authorities say one person remained missing after the blast and U.S. Coast Guard crews were searching for him. "We are treating it as a search and rescue", Lopinto said.

The six people injured have been taken to area hospitals. The other two are in stable condition at East Jefferson General Hospital.

What caused the blast is unclear, but fire investigators are looking at the possibility of a combination of chemicals that may have ignited on the platform and led to the explosion.

The Deputy head of the administration of Jefferson parish also reported that the incident injured seven people.

Chief David Tibbets of the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department says the platform, located in Jefferson Parish, is used for the transfer of oil. He said the department's current goal is to stop oil flow and, if needed, let it burn off safely.

It's a brackish tidal basin that is fed both by the Gulf of Mexico and by fresh water from rivers and streams in 16 Louisiana parishes and four MS counties. "My house actually shook", he said.

According to him, the scene was sent to a rescue boat.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality was on scene conducting water quality testing; no oil sheen was seen on the waters in preliminary tests.
