Google to Provide Emergency Cell Service to Puerto Rico Via Balloons

Google to Provide Emergency Cell Service to Puerto Rico Via Balloons

Alphabet Inc has just been given permission to float 30 balloons over USA territory Puerto Rico, providing them with much needed mobile reception and internet. The X innovations team that runs Project Loon, which was spun out of Google, now needs to finalize a telecomms firm to partner with.

Google's balloons received approval to fly over Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands for up to six months, according to the FCC note. After Hurricane Maria made landfall and devastated the area, the electric grid and wireless communications are still mostly out of service.

The project was initially announced in 2013, intending to use balloons at high altitudes - and powered by the sun - to get cell service and internet capabilities into remote areas.

It aims to temporarily re-establish Puerto Rico's cellular network - where 83 per cent of cell sites were still out of service Friday, according to FCC figures. In the latter country, Project Loon was already testing with a local carrier before the nation encountered heavy flooding. "We've been making solid progress on this next step and would like to thank everyone who's been lending a hand".

"That's why we need to take innovative approaches to help restore connectivity on the island", he added, urging wireless carriers to "cooperate with Project Loon to maximize this effort's chances of success".

Besides the two titles, they have finished runners-up twice (1993 and 1997) while finishing third in the 1999 edition. The 21-member USA team came from Dubai where they had a seven-day camp, preparing for the U-17 World Cup.

As Puerto Rico and its people continue to reel from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria, two of the world's biggest tech companies have outlined plans for bringing power back to the Caribbean island and U.S. territory.

At the time, they noted that deploying to Puerto Rico would be harder than their previous emergency deployment to Peru as they did not have existing infrastructure in place.

This move comes just a week after the Project Loon team tweeted that they looking at ways to bring emergency connectivity to Puerto Rico.
