CPI rises 3.28% in September; August IIP jumps 4.3%

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) or retail inflation stood at 4.39 per cent in September 2016.

Earlier this month, the RBI left interest rates unchanged, after cutting the key rate by 25 basis points in August, while raising its retail inflation projection for October-March to a range of 4.2 to 4.6 per cent, and lowered its economic growth estimates.

The YoY CPI dropped to 3.44 per cent in urban areas and 3.15 per cent in rural areas in September as compared to 3.64 per cent and 5.04 per cent respectively in the corresponding period a year ago.

Meanwhile, the index of industrial production (IIP) increased to 4.3 per cent in August against July's figure of 1.2 per cent. The previous high in IIP growth was recorded at 5.1 per cent in November 2016. Morgan Stanley expects CPI inflation to rise further to 3.8%, inching closer to Reserve bank of India's (RBI) inflation target of 4%, while WPI inflation may inch up to 3.4% in September from 3.2% in August, largely driven by higher oil prices. She added, "Encouragingly, the sequential improvement in industrial growth in August 2017 was broad-based, led by all three sectors (mining, manufacturing and electricity) and five of the six use-based industries (except infrastructure/construction goods)".

IIP growth during April-August period of this fiscal stood at 2.2 per cent, down from 5.9 per cent in the same period in 2016-17.

As food prices remained steady, the country's retail inflation also remained flat at 3.28% in September.
