Bangladesh to move 800000 Rohingya into single camp

Bangladesh to move 800000 Rohingya into single camp

Bloody riots in 2012 forced over 100,000 Rohingya to flee to refugee camps in southeast Bangladesh, where many still live.

Press TV, referencing a United Kingdom charity, have reported that the majority of the 145,000 Rohingya children who have fled to Bangladesh to escape the violent military crackdown by the Myanmar authorities are suffering from severe malnutrition.

Up until now they've been living in a range of different refugee camps across southern Bangladesh.

They plan to expand an existing camp near the border town of Cox's Bazar so that it can accommodate around 800,000 people.

Bangladesh still plans to expand a massive settlement in the south to accommodate almost the 900,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees that have streamed into the country from Myanmar.

"Solutions lies with (Myanmar) because the problem was created by the Myanmar government".

The UN has labelled Burma's refusal to grant access to Rakhine state - the scene of alleged ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims - as "unnacceptable".

Since then, refugees pouring in from Myanmar have brought tales of death and destruction in their homeland, including villages burned to the ground and women and children being murdered. "Obviously there's into the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya still in Myanmar, and we want to be ready in case there is a further exodus", Lowcock told a news briefing in Geneva.

The home minister had also said that India would not violate any worldwide law by deporting Rohingyas, as it was not a signatory to the UN Refugees Convention 1951.

The United Nations has condemned current difficulties in providing humanitarian aid to Rohingya muslims.

Myanmar denies the majority of the Rohingya citizenship, even though many have lived there for generations.

Mark Lowcock, UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, reiterated an appeal for access to the population in northern Rakhine, saying the situation was "unacceptable".

"The Rohingya people must be able to return voluntarily with safety and dignity".

With New Delhi lending an ear to Bangladeshi concerns, Foreign Secretary Haque now says India and Bangladesh are on the same page even as he praised India's stance including at the UNHRC. As a result, they're effectively stateless.

"Those who have been accused of committing abuses should be removed from command responsibilities immediately and prosecuted for wrongdoing", she said.
