Wildfire burns 5000 acres, forces hundreds of evacuations in California (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

Wildfire burns 5000 acres, forces hundreds of evacuations in California (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

Hundreds of homes have been evacuated and an 11-mile stretch of the 210 Freeway remain shut down Saturday as the La Tuna Fire one home and about 5,000 acres in the Sun Valley area. High winds created spot fires near the 210 Freeway and LAFD attempted to prevent the fire from hopping the freeway, anticipating it would burn at least 2,000 acres if it happened.

Three structures were destroyed by the fire.

"This continues to be a very dynamic fire", Los Angeles fire Chief Ralph M. Terrazas said at a news conference Saturday.

Hundreds of firefighters, backed by water-dropping planes and helicopters, were battling the flames in triple-digit temperatures.

Mayor Garcetti said he had "great confidence" the fire could be contained so long as the wind subsides; as of the weekend it had mostly done so.

Firefighters had to evacuate people from their homes and also closed the 210 Freeway because of the uncontrollable fire, which spread in every direction.

Around 10 hours later, the LAFD said strong gusting winds meant the fire was erratic and unpredictable, leaving officials "unable to give a firm prediction on all areas potentially at risk".

More than 500 firefighters are trying to control the fire and 100 others, who were sent to Houston to help that city through flooding, have been called back to California.

Like other bravehearts, Ali climbed the colony's iron barricade and jumped into the water to rescue those trapped in the cars. The Fire Brigade and National Disaster Response Force teams arrived later and fished out vehicles with the help of cranes.

The fire has not caused any injuries or property damage, Stewart said. Authorities soon ordered mandatory evacuations, street by street, for neighborhoods in Burbank closest to Verdugo Mountain Park.

People carry their belongings and dog to a vehicle as they prepare to evacuate as the La Tuna Fire approaches in the Shadow Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, September 2, 2017.

"The groups are believed to be far enough away from fire (not) to be in any immediate danger", said Joel Ives, spokesman with the Hood River County sheriff's office.

Hot temperatures and high winds on Friday in the Los Angeles area contributed to the "large plume growth and extreme fire behavior", the National Weather Service office in Los Angeles said.

They said they have no new information on firefighters' efforts to save the grove.

Silverman also stressed the importance of heeding evacuation orders.

"Despite fire size, we remain confident in the plan in place and the work all firefighters at the incident are doing in defending property and lives", the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
