Uber Rival Lyft Has Been Cosying up With London Transport Officials

In its decision, TfL said Uber's approach to operating its business demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility, pointing to a failure to report serious criminal offences, its approach to medical certificates, and its use of Greyball software that can stop regulatory bodies accessing Uber's full app.

The Sun newspaper reported past year that 32 sexual assault claims were made against Uber drivers in 2015/16, more than a fifth of all claims against taxi drivers filed to British police forces.

Dara Khosrowshahi issued a letter to London's Evening Standard newspaper acknowledging that the company "has got things wrong along the way" as it expanded. The heavy-handed and regressive decision to try and banish Uber from the capital's streets is a slap in the face for the millions of Londoners who chose the service, and a potentially devastating blow to the 40,000 drivers who rely on it to make a living.

If its ban is upheld, Uber will have to show that it is changing in order to get back into the lucrative London market, said Jan Dawson, chief analysts for Jackdaw Research in California.

"On behalf of everyone at Uber globally, I'd like to apologise for the mistakes we've made". While the London mayor was responding to a petition by charge.org, he noted that Uber has 21 days to appeal the decision by TFL.

Meanwhile, a petition demanding that Mr Khan reverse the licensing decision reached 750,0000 signatures.

Leishman backs up good start with a low score at BMW
I got to come out and play really good golf because he's not making any mistakes. Now there are advantages to having some degree of anonymity, he says.

When asked why they used Uber rather than the traditional Hackney cabs, 77 per cent said they were cheaper, 64 per cent said they were quicker and one in three praised their cleanliness.

Uber drivers like James Farrar, the chairman of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain's United Private Hire Drivers branch, wondered how they would pay their bills. More than 3.5 million Londoners now use the service. The apology comes after Transport for London decided not to renew its license to operate. Sources close to Uber say that the company has been seeking to hold a meeting with Sadiq Khan since he became London's mayor in 2016.

Nigel Mackay, a lawyer at Leigh Day law firm, which has challenged Uber over its working practices, also indicated Uber's appeal "could go all the way to the Supreme Court". "It's been incredible to hear your stories of Uber improving lives across this city-from drivers who use our app to earn a living, to riders who rely on us to get home safely after a night out".

Even if Uber is officially banned from London, the 30,000-40,0000 drivers operating there could continue to work while these new rulings are fought in the courthouses.

"This was one of the unusual things around the TfL notice yesterday is they are the ones who do all of the checks and license the drivers".
