Tesla working with AMD to develop chip for self-driving car

Tesla working with AMD to develop chip for self-driving car

It looks like AMD might have scored a seriously large contract through electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors, with the companies collaborating on a new AI accelerator for self-driving cars.

GlobalFoundries, which fabricates chips, has a wafer supply agreement in place with AMD.

Tesla is reportedly working on a chip to handle all the tasks needed to power the fleet of fully self-driving cars that its CEO Elon Musk promised would be road-ready by 2019. Tesla has brought in several AMD veterans after Keller was hired.

XAutoplay: On | OffA report from CNBC, issued just before the market close, said Tesla is running tests on the first samples of the AMD processor.

Tesla, AMD, and GlobalFoundries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Currently Tesla is looking to kit out all current models of their electric cars with the technical capability to perform an autopilot function, although a software update at some point in the future will be required in order to make the cars actually capable of driving around their passengers without input. Nvidia declined to comment. Intel bought Mobileye in March for $15.3 billion in order to further its own autonomous-car project. He joined Tesla early a year ago and is now the head of Autopilot hardware.

Its current Autopilot system uses NVIDIA chips, but Tesla clearly wants more: by building its own specialized processor, it can create a technology that can do precisely what it wants to achieve, including true autonomous driving.

AMD shares were up 2.2 percent in extended trading.

Notably Tesla is not working with Intel, which has enjoyed a long working relationship with Alphabet's Waymo auto group.
