Polls close in New Zealand's cliffhanger election

Polls close in New Zealand's cliffhanger election

New Zealand's ruling National Party won the largest number of votes in the country's general election on Saturday, securing a comfortable margin over the Labour Party after what had promised to be the most hotly contested race in recent history.

In Christchurch Central, Labour's Duncan Webb beat sitting National MP and Cabinet minister Nicky Wagner, who had won the seat in the last two elections.

Both parties were scrambling to form coalitions with the minor parties in order to reach 61 seats and the ability to govern in the 120-seat parliament.

She expressed disappointment in the result, which mean she was comparing her party's position to where it was in some polls three weeks ago (ahead of National) instead of to the incredible transformation since she took over the party seven weeks ago.

Moreover, English was legitimising New Zealand First as a government partner with the other party they had legitimised, National.

On Saturday evening leader James Shaw said "This is the fight of our lives and we are still here".

Polls heading into Saturday's vote put the two main parties neck and neck, with a slight advantage for National in some surveys, according to Radio NZ.

The numbers say she is an alternative Prime Minister but her tone did not suggest it. Victory for us was always about victory for them.

ANU engineering students from New Zealand Yash Vyas and Ali Bulbul have been following the New Zealand election closely.

Labour would get a coalition Government just over the line with the support of NZ First and the Greens.

Ardern expected the party would pick up more votes when the special votes were counted because those who enrolled at the polling booth would not yet have been counted. I believe in New Zealand, I'm trying to improve New Zealanders.

She said she still hoped to become prime minister as part of a Labour-Greens-NZF coalition, despite Mr Peters' historic differences of opinion with the Greens.

"I'm a believer in established parties, especially with things like Brexit and Donald Trump, and unestablished people getting into power has little appeal to me", he said.

Even though National remains the biggest party in parliament, there is no obligation for Peters to choose it over Labour. "So Winston Peters rules", said Bryce Edwards, analyst at Wellington-based Critical Politics.

More than 986,000 ballots have already been cast, accounting for nearly a third of the 3.2 million New Zealanders on the electoral rolls. And before that she can look forward to pointing her energised and enlarged caucus in the direction of a tiring fourth-term government, hobbling along with one leg tied to New Zealand First.
