Most powerful solar flare in over a decade causes widespread radio blackouts

Most powerful solar flare in over a decade causes widespread radio blackouts

Nasa captured two high-intensity solar flares emitted from the Sun on Wednesday.

The first flare peaked at 6:15 a.m. EDT (1015 GMT) and is classified as an M7.3, or a midlevel flare. It's pretty notable that such a large flare came out of such a calm period.

The X-class is the most intense category of solar flares.

Solar astronomers classify flares according to their brightness in the X-ray wavelengths. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc. M-class flares are a tenth the size of X-class flares.

Attention, earthlings - especially those of you in the Midwest: We are under a "strong magnetic storm watch" through Saturday, thanks to the sun's release of the most powerful solar flare recorded since 2008.

The solar flares were strong enough to cause radio disruptions on the day but will have a continued impact during the night.

And a flare of this magnitude can cause radiation storms within the Earth's atmosphere and, as seen yesterday morning, radio blackouts. This is in anticipation of the arrival of the coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the X9.3 flare. If they become too entangled, the stored energy is released in the form of a solar flare.

The Lenovo-owned company recently launched the Moto G5S Plus, featuring a 5.5-inch FHD display and a dual-camera setup. The smartphone was spotted on the Samsung Thailand website revealing specifications , price, and availability as well.

In other words, people who don't usually see auroras might get a chance to see the dancing curtains of light thanks to the powerful flares this week. If a similar sized storm hit today, it is estimated it could cost around $2 trillion. The last powerful solar flare had a measurement of X9 on December 5, 2006.

"The X9.3 flare was the largest flare so far in the current solar cycle, the approximately 11-year-cycle during which the Sun's activity waxes and wanes".

Nasa said the intensity of solar activity is decreasing in general and heading towards a "solar minimum".

At the end of the active phase, these outbreaks are becoming increasingly rare but can still be powerful. Every solar cycle, the Sun delivers a few standout punches.

How long sunspots last varies.

"This is not how it used to be and the rotation rate has slowed a bit at latitudes around about 60 degrees", study author Yvonne Elsworth, from the University of Birmingham, U.K, said.
