Is Vladimir Putin Behind Kim Jong-un's Latest Missile Threat?

Is Vladimir Putin Behind Kim Jong-un's Latest Missile Threat?

China is the closest diplomatic and economic ally of North Korea, but last week joined forces with the rest of the UN Security Council states, voting for imposing the economic sanctions against Pyongyang.

But two senior South Korean diplomats, interviewed by Reuters, expressed concern that Trump's rhetoric could provoke a miscalculation from Kim and prompt him to launch an attack.

The United States and South Korea conducted joint drills over South Korean airspace on Monday afternoon, weeks after North Koreaconducted its sixth nuclear test and the United Nations Security Council adopted sanctions curtailing oil exports to the country. But some critics have raised questions over the effectiveness of the restrictions, as North Korea is still able to trade internationally.

China's foreign ministry spokesman has said that by sending "threatening messages" including "warnings of military action", the USA is "further complicating the situation".

Moon did not directly criticise Trump - who two days earlier threatened from the same podium to "totally destroy" North Korea - but appealed for calm.

"We can't be satisfied that the United Nations has approved new sanctions against North Korea", Abe said.

"CNN: "Japan split over how to deal with North Korean missile launches - "... underneath the calm exterior, Friday's launch has widened a growing fault line in the ideological war over how Japan should deal with the North Korean threat to the region". The U.N. assesses that 18 million of the 25 million North Koreans are experiencing varying levels of food shortages and the country also suffers from high child and maternal mortality rates.

US allies said on Wednesday that enforcing global sanctions on North Korea, and not mere dialogue, was the key to getting Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.

In a phone call on Monday, Mr Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula, with the Chinese leader saying that both countries shared extensive common interests, Chinese official news agency Xinhua reports.

Many analysts expect North Korea to dominate TrumpĪ„s speech on Tuesday night at the UN General Assembly.

North Korea has been hit with sanctions repeatedly over its continued nuclear program.

The drill was to "demonstrate the deterrence capability of the US-South Korea alliance against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats", it added.

Of course, for political elites in the Abe administration in Japan, they will rightly point out that Saddam Hussein - just like Kim Jong-un of North Korea - never found it hard to build up the armed forces.

And those missiles are growing in strength: on 4 July, North Korea conducted its first test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which it claims could reach "anywhere in the world".

"He said: "[North Korea] may launch ballistic missiles that would fly over our nation again in the future".

Mattis told reporters that he believed diplomacy and sanctions were so far succeeding in putting more pressure on Pyongyang.
