Interpol, Risking Politicization, Admits PA as Member

Interpol, Risking Politicization, Admits PA as Member

Commenting on Twitter account, Interpol, International Police Agency, announced at plenary session in Beijing that Palestinian Authority and Solomon Islands should be called for accession.

The Palestinian bid was part of efforts to push for membership in global institutions to advance the goal of statehood.

"We are disappointed by the Interpol vote to admit the "State of Palestine" as a full member state", Anti-Defamation League Senior Vice President for International Affairs Sharon Nazarian said in a statement.

In a secret ballot at Interpol's annual conference, 75 countries voted in favor of adding Palestine - and 24 opposed the move. He promised to uphold Palestinian commitments to combating crime and strengthening the rule of law.

To be sure, the fact that a large majority of Interpol member states ignored Jerusalem's requests does not contradict Netanyahu's assertion that Israel is a "rising global power" that has much to offer to the countries of the world.

"It was a hard effort, but it produced results", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared happily at the time.

Trump Calls for July 4th Military Parade Down Pennsylvania Avenue
Trump hoped to have military vehicles in his Inauguration Day parade, but this plan never came to fruition. That parade celebrated the end of the Gulf War - though it did have some critics.

In 2012, the U.N. General Assembly elevated the Palestinian Authority's observer status from "entity" to "non-member state", similar to the Vatican. Whether it's UNESCO, the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council or Interpol - when it comes to the Palestinians' aspiration for statehood, Israel stands no chance. One should therefore not be surprised when Palestinians conclude that their only non-violent path to ending the occupation is through internationalizing their cause.

The approval vote requires the Palestinians to pay membership dues worth 0.03 percent of the Interpol budget.

A page on the Interpol website listed Palestine as a member since 27 September 2017.

"Such an acceptance sends a clear message to the Israeli government that we are not population centers at its mercy; we believe in a system that is based on the global rule of law and due process and one which enforces accountability and cooperation at the worldwide level", PLO Executive Committee member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi said.

A previous attempt to join Interpol was thwarted during the previous general assembly in Indonesia, when the body made a decision to postpone any vote on accepting new members.
