Four American women hospitalized after acid attack in France

Four American women hospitalized after acid attack in France

In January 2016, a 15-year-old Turkish Kurd was arrested after attacking a Jewish teacher on a Marseille street. The spokeswoman told the AP that the suspect did not make extremist threats. Two other women escaped with shock.

In April, French police said they thwarted an imminent "terror attack" and arrested two suspected radicals in Marseille just days before the first round of France's presidential election. All four were treated at a hospital Sunday.

The US embassy in Paris said diplomatic staff at the consulate in Marseille are in contact with French authorities.

The prosecutor's office could not be reached for comment but told France 3 that one of the women had been hit in the eye with acid and had trouble seeing.

Since November 2015, France has been on high alert after coordinated multi-site attacks killed at least 130 people in Paris.

UPDATE #1 - 4:30pm EST: According to CNN, French police say the attacker was "deranged" and "mentally unstable", and therefore, they're standing by their earlier assertion that this was not a terror attack.

La Provence, the main local newspaper, quoted police sources as saying that after the attack, the suspect had displayed pictures of herself with burns on her body. The two women reportedly sprayed with acid remain in hospital.
