Defiant Republicans in last-gasp Obamacare repeal bid

Defiant Republicans in last-gasp Obamacare repeal bid

When asked Tuesday why he voted for an Obamacare repeal bill that kept 100 percent of Obamacare's spending, but opposes a bill that keeps 90 percent of Obamacare's spending, Paul told THE WEEKLY STANDARD: "This affirmatively votes for a distribution system for a trillion-dollar program".

"It repeals as much of the Affordable Care Act as it can under the reconciliation rules in Washington, and then it permits the states to make decisions beyond that", the governor said. The measure is supported by the White House and Senate leaders, but supporters are still looking for the 50 GOP votes they would need to pass the bill over solid Democratic opposition.

The Republican Senate leaders are under pressure to pass Graham/Cassidy and repeal Obamacare - in the wake of failed attempts earlier this year - by September 30, when it would take only GOP votes for it to advance, according to rules relating to passing a budget. But, he said, "I am politicizing my son's health problems because I have to".

But Kimmel said Cassidy's new bill, the Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson legislation, failed the test.

By contrast, President Donald Trump is urging Republicans to get behind the latest GOP effort to repeal Obamacare, which has been drafted by senators Lindsey Graham and Bill Cassidy. John McCain, whose vote single-handedly killed the last reform bill in July, says he's more favorable to the most recent plan. Meanwhile, SPDR S&P Pharmaceuticals (XPH) and First Trust Health Care AlphaDEX (FXH) declined more than 1% apiece.

"This new bill actually does pass the Jimmy Kimmel test, but a different Jimmy Kimmel test", Kimmel said on Tuesday's show.

While the new bill does not allow states to waive the requirement that keeps insurers from rejecting people with preexisting conditions altogether, the waivers could end up allowing insurers to charge sick people drastically more money for coverage, essentially pricing them out of the market.

But the Graham-Cassidy bill does not contain those guarantees.

And it would shift money from places like Maryland and DC, which expanded Medicaid, to places like Virginia, which did not. Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson, of Florida, is a cosponsor.

"Legislation should receive consideration under regular order, including hearings in health committees and input from the appropriate health-related parties", added the governors' letter.
