Boy, 8, dies from hammer attack after trying to protect younger sister

An 8-year-old boy from Sacramento, California was beaten to death on September 1 while attempting to protect his younger sister from molestation.

Dante Daniels was declared brain dead after the attack by his mother's former partner in Sacremento, California, and died six days later.

Authorities said Chaney, at one point, turned the hammer an knife on the girl and the mother, who was reportedly out at the time of the incident. He allegedly also used lighter fluid on them.

"Trying to save his sister from this child molester and that's why he was beat the worst", Monique Brown, the grandmother of the eight-year-old boy, told KTXL-TV.

"Dante gave his heart to a 4-year-old In Southern California, so a 4-year-old lives because of [him]".

That prompted 23-year-old Deandre Chaney Jr.to attack Dante, Danae and their 28-year-old mother Elizabeth Salone.

The boy's death came just days after having started third grade at Oak Ridge Elementary School.

After the assault, cops say Chaney stole the family's vehicle and fled the scene.

Both mother, sister and Dante were left for dead by Chaney Jr, who took Salone's auto keys, cell-phone and money and fled.

Chaney, who was also charged with lewd acts with a child under 14, is being held without bail.

Prior to the murder, the suspect and victim were involved in an alleged drug deal, according to the arrest warrant obtained by WFAA.

And in his final moments awake, Brown says the 8-year-old was a hero - showing incredible courage in the face of his accused killer.

In October, Chaney plead no contest to a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.

A GoFundMe campaign set up by relatives of Dante's family to help cover their medical bills and other expenses was trending on the crowdfunding website on Monday.
