Venezuela's ousted chief prosecutor flees to Colombia

Venezuela's ousted chief prosecutor flees to Colombia

This is the second attempt since March by the government of Maduro to usurp functions of the legislature: the Supreme Court issued a decision in late March saying it would assume the role and functions of the Assembly, a move that triggered a widespread and ongoing Constitutional crisis, which forced Maduro to call on a supra-Constitutional Constituent Assembly as a means of retaining and amplifying the power of the executive.

Venezuela's pro-government constitutional assembly is taking over powers of the opposition-led congress.

Faced with this situation originated by the extremist groups that oppose the Bolivarian Government, more than 8 million Venezuelans - a people of peace, who believe in democracy, who believe in the sovereignty of the country and very well know its laws, chose to exercise their democratic right, by voting and supporting the proposal of the activation of the National Constituent Assembly. The country's opposition refused to give up their seats in the National Assembly then, and they're refusing to participate in the "new" legislative body now.

"They are very anxious and anguished", Ortega said.

Maduro has already moved against his most prominent critic, former Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz, who prior to the July 30 vote declared the new assembly unconstitutional because it was not first authorized by a public plebiscite.

No immediate details were provided on whether the couple was seeking asylum, with officials confirming only that Ortega had completed the "corresponding migration process". The reality is that those deaths were attributed to opposition forces fabricating destruction and creating chaos to fuel the worldwide media and allow them to spin the occurrences in Venezuela, alluding responsibility for said violence to the Bolivarian Government; their aim - to overthrow the government.

The government has argued that opposition lawmakers behind months of anti-government protests are working with the U.S.to violently oust President Nicolas Maduro. The 59-year-old told Reuters in an interview this month that she feared the government would "deprive me of my life".

"As long as the Maduro regime continues to conduct itself as an authoritarian dictatorship, we are prepared to bring the full weight of American economic and diplomatic power to bear in support of the Venezuelan people as they seek to restore their democracy", said a statement by State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert.

Worldwide reaction to Friday's move by Venezuela's constitutional assembly was swift.
