Teenager jumps out of plane's emergency exit as it lands

A teenage boy opened an emergency exit on a plane that landed at San Francisco International Airport Tuesday afternoon and exited the plane onto the tarmac, a spokesman for the airport said.

The teen, a USA citizen, was accosted by a construction crew working nearby on the airfield. He was also reportedly taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Yakel said the teen was not injured and air traffic was not affected.

"We just landed and then I hear some people scream ... like, 'No!'" said 11-year-old passenger Andrea Sepulveda Guzman, who was on the plane.

It was not immediately clear why the teenager had leapt from the plane and run. And then he just starts running the other way.

There have been other similar incidents before where passengers have tried to jump off planes.

A 17-year-old opened the emergency exit door on COPA Flight 208 and exited the aircraft onto the tarmac at San Francisco International Airport.

Airport spokesman Doug Yakel says a construction crew working nearby confronted the teenager and held him until police arrived and arrested him. The teen was a passenger on a Boeing 737 from Panama City.

Copa Airlines said that an investigation is under way and that the airline is cooperating with authorities.

'They were yelling "tell the flight attendants, relay the message back, the door's open, someone jumped off",' Crowder told the television station. Though, a passenger named Isaac Rodrigues said that since there was no door to close, the flight attendant used her body to block the gap so that the plane could continue to the gate, reported AP.
