Massive Protests Planned to Counter Trump's Phoenix Rally

Massive Protests Planned to Counter Trump's Phoenix Rally

Democrats on Monday slammed the prospect of President Trump granting a pardon to former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, saying it would mark a win for "white supremacy" and set the stage for the commander-in-chief to use his constitutional power to keep his family out of legal trouble. He said he was expecting tens of thousands of people downtown but said that's not unusual for the city.

During his rally in Phoenix, Trump is expected to make another pitch for his border wall with Mexico, even though congressional funding appears to be in doubt.

"I am seriously considering a pardon for Sheriff Arpaio", Trump told Fox News in comments posted earlier this month.

"Sadly, that is what is likely to be on display in Phoenix tomorrow night".

"They really can't live with him because he is a drag on their politics and there is nothing more that office-holders care about than their own political survival", said American University presidential historian Allan Lichtman.

"Gov. Ducey's focus has been working with law enforcement toward a safe event in downtown Phoenix for all those involved and in the area".

The event ended without major incident, but not before the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned Phoenix of what to expect, Phoenix sent a large contingent of police, and emotions ran high.

Mr Flake, for his part, has been a consistent critic of Mr Trump and it prompted the President to wade into Arizona state politics and favour Mr Flake's opponent - another reason Mr Ducey may be avoiding the rally.

President Donald Trump is moving forward with a Phoenix rally on Tues., despite a request to delay it from the city's mayor.

Take a look at Trump's planned stops and the planned protests in the map below.

Court officials say no special preparations are being taken to prepare for the possibility of arrests that might result from protests or other activities associated with President Donald Trump's scheduled visit Tuesday to Phoenix.

Fred Vanderhoof, chairman of the Fresno County Republican Party, said the organization made a decision to invite Arpaio because "he's probably the most famous sheriff in the country and he was an early supporter of President Trump, so we just felt it was appropriate to honor him". Flake was slammed by the president as "toxic" on his typical early morning Twitter last Thursday. But she did say police would "create a situation for people to express themselves".

"President Trump does not know how to be a unifier - does not know how to ease the pain of this country like we saw George Bush do after 9/11", Gallego said Monday.

Lines said he welcomed Trump to Arizona a few weeks ago and believes the president's visit will help state Republicans get ready for the 2018 midterm election.

"I did not feel it was the right time", he said. "I don't think he represents the conservative viewpoint, the constitutional viewpoint". It would also come just one week after Trump held a disastrous press conference at which he said there were "fine people" marching among the neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville. "Let's just hope this turns out to be an event filled with lawful and peaceful First Amendment expression and that these emotions do not spill over into violence".
