Love triangle ruled out as Oxford University employee charged over Chicago death

Love triangle ruled out as Oxford University employee charged over Chicago death

CHICAGO (AP) _ A former Northwestern University professor and an Oxford University employee accused of killing a man as part of what prosecutors called a sexual fantasy have another court date scheduled this week in Chicago.

Andrew Warren, 56, a senior treasury assistant at the institution's Somerville College, is accused alongside Professor Wyndham Lathem, 42, of murdering Trenton Cornell-Duranleau.

Cornell-Duranleau, a hairstylist who was in a relationship with Lathem, was found dead inside Lathem's apartment on July 27.

Lathem and Warren surrendered to California authorities August 4 after an eight-day manhunt.

In a statement, Northwestern's Vice President for University Relations Alan Cubbage said Lathem was "terminated for the act of fleeing from police when there was an arrest warrant out for him". The autopsy also found that the victim was stabbed 47 times.

Both men have confessed to authorities.

Transfer revolution: Window to shut before Premier League season starts next year
The current transfer window closes on August 31, more than two weeks after the start of the domestic league season. The majority of clubs are in favour but maybe all of us have to be for it to go through.

Lathem's lawyer, Barry Sheppard, who spoke to reporters after the hearing, said that people should not "rush to judgment". The two men charged with the crime had been emailing for months, and had developed an elaborate fantasy in which they would kill someone, and then kill each other simultaneously, authorities said.

When Cornell-Duranleau awoke, he began screaming and fighting back, while Lathem yelled at Warren to help subdue him, prosecutors claim; Warren then came over and struck the younger man in the head with a lamp, while Lathem continued to stab him.

Just one day after the killing investigators say Lathem and Warren drove around 80 miles northwest of Chicago, to Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.

"What I can tell you is it was not domestic in nature, like a husband-wife or boyfriend-boyfriend or a love triangle", Deenihan said Sunday. "It was a little more dark and disturbing, as far as I'm concerned". According to Anthony Guglielmi, chief spokesman for the Chicago police, Lathem said in the video that he made "the biggest mistake of his life", reported the Chicago Tribune.

Both Warren and Wyndham were quiet in court, as prosecutors went through the timing of events, saying Lathem paid for Warren's ticket to travel from England to the U.S.to fulfill their fantasy.

Lathem and Warren both appeared in court in California last week, where they agreed to return to IL to face charges.
