Wildfires in area cause evacuation of Little Fort and Dunn Lake area

As wildfires continue to rage across British Columbia, several big Canadian lumber mills have been forced to temporarily close. The fire has scorched about 400 square kilometres of land and more than 14,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.

Crews were getting a break from slightly cooler temperatures and diminishing winds on Sunday as they battled the pair of blazes that destroyed structures and closed a highway.

Dave Scott was at his home Friday outside 100 Mile House when a friend of his, a volunteer firefighter in the area, sent him an ominous text: "Get out now". I've heard too many heartbreaking stories to count.

In the hot, dry conditions over the weekend, thousands of Californians evacuated homes at risk from wildfires.

The blaze about 60 miles north of Sacramento grew rapidly to more than seven square miles and was almost 20% contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

To the north, evacuees started to return home late Monday as firefighters made progress against a foothill blaze near Oroville in Butte County.

After inspecting the fire's damage, Cal Fire determined that 41 homes had been destroyed.

More than 2,000 personnel were fighting the Alamo Fire in San Luis Obispo County, which had spread to more than 28,000 acres and was 60% contained, according to Cal Fire's website Monday evening.
