Trump Hotels left orange faced: Hackers plunder systems for credit cards

Trump Hotels left orange faced: Hackers plunder systems for credit cards

Rosewood Hotel Group is advising customers who made reservations between November 3, 2016 and March 9, 2017 to be on the alert for incidents of fraud or identity theft after it emerged that the group's reservations service provider, Sabre Hospitality Solutions, had suffered a security breach.

SynXis handles hotel reservations made by consumers not just through hotels, but also through online travel agencies.

The Sabre breach was first reported by independent security reporter Brian Krebs back in May, after Sabre mentioned it in a quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Trump Hotels could not be immediately reached for comment.

"The privacy and protection of our guests' information is a matter we take very seriously, and we recommend that affected guests review the information in this letter for some steps they can take to protect themselves against potential misuse of their information", the statement added. Hackers accessed guest names, addresses and phone numbers, as well as credit card numbers and expiration dates, between August 2016 and March 2017, according to a notice on the company's site.

The organisation noted that Social Security numbers, passports and driver's licence numbers were not accessed in the breach. The hotel chain learned of the breach in June 2015 but waited an additional four months to notify those affected. Hard Rock Hotels last week admitted that its customers were also involved, and Loews Hotels has reportedly been sending its customers breach notifications.

Some customers had their personal information taken from several Trump Hotel locations. Given yet another disclosure of a hotel using Sabre software being hacked, this may actually be the tip of the iceberg in terms of a widespread hacking campaign that may involve many other hotel chains as well.

Cybercriminals didn't directly hack the Trump Hotels' systems, but rather the reservation scheduling service it employs.

Sabre informed Trump Hotels about the current breach at its properties including Trump Las Vegas and Trump Chicago on June 5, according to the notice.

Sabre is working with a cybersecurity firm to support its investigation and has notified both law enforcement and major credit card brands. Per an investigation into "an incident, ' Sabre discovered that a hacker had gained access to 'account credentials" which made it possible for this person/group to access some reservation data as well as payment card data.

The Sabre incident affecting luxury hotels and resorts is not the only one this year.

"Why are hackers targeting hotels?".
