Senate passes sanctions; Putin accuses U.S. lawmakers of 'insolence'

Senate passes sanctions; Putin accuses U.S. lawmakers of 'insolence'

Some 83% Germans call the US new sanctions against Russian Federation an incorrect initiative taken by Washington, results of a poll conducted by the Forsa polling group show.

Republican Senator John McCain, a leading congressional voice calling for a firm line against Russian Federation, said before the vote: 'The United States of America needs to send a strong message to Vladimir Putin and any other aggressor that we will not tolerate attacks on our democracy'.

The bill is created to affect a wide range of Russian industries, hitting the country squarely in the pocketbook.

Russia had originally threatened the ouster of diplomats and seizure of property in December after the US ordered 35 Russian envoys out of the USA and seized two embassy compounds outside NY and Washington in protest of alleged Russian meddling in the election.

He complained that "it's impossible to endlessly tolerate this kind of insolence towards our country", referring to tougher United States sanctions that were backed by the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Besides angering Moscow, the legislation has upset the European Union, which has said the new sanctions might affect its energy security and prompt it to act, too. But late Wednesday he announced that he sees "a path forward on legislation to sanction Iran, Russia and North Korea" following "very productive discussions".

The sanctions package imposes mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them. But Putin said he would wait, in an apparent effort to build trust with Trump and hope that the newly elected president would reverse the decision after his inauguration.

Trump read early drafts of the bill and negotiated regarding critical elements of it.

"This kind of blackmail aimed at restricting the cooperation between Russian Federation and other nations is a threat for many countries and global businesses", the statement said.

Trump can impose new sanctions at any time through an executive order.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow was not immediately available for comment. If Trump rejected the bill, Corker said, Congress would overrule him. The White House has been lobbying for weeks for a bill with a lighter impact.

In reference Russia's decision to downsize of the number of United States diplomatic corps in the country, Ryabkov noted that Russian Federation waited seven months before engaging in such an action. "It's impossible to endlessly tolerate this boorishness towards our country".

Russia's Foreign Ministry then recommend that President Vladimir Putin respond in kind by expelling USA diplomats.

"It is well known that Russian Federation did and continues doing everything possible to normalize bilateral relations, to develop ties and cooperation with the United States on crucial issues of the global agenda, including before all the fight against terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, illegal drug trafficking, illegal migration, cybercrime, etc". If the legislation produces the broad bipartisan support leaders from both parties predicted, it would force Trump to sign it or face the political embarrassment of Congress overriding his veto.

"This goes beyond all reasonable bounds", Putin said.
