Qatar's diplomatic crisis is sapping confidence in its state finances

Qatar's diplomatic crisis is sapping confidence in its state finances

A report by a British think tank on Wednesday claims that Saudi Arabia is the principle foreign promoter of Islamist extremism in the United Kingdom and alleges a "clear and growing link" between overseas funding and violent Jihadist groups in the country.

Following the foreign ministers' meeting in Cairo, the quartet of blockading countries appear to be poised to implement further sanctions that could force other countries and companies to have to chose between doing business with them, or with Qatar.

Qatar is already the world's leading exporter of liquified natural gas, accounting for about 30% of global demand.

What Qatar said in response to the demands remains unclear.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri told reporters at a joint news conference in Cairo that Qatar's response was "generally negative" and failed to "lay the foundation for Qatar's reversal of the policies it pursues".

Qatar Airways said on Thursday that passengers travelling to the United States can now carry their laptops and other large electronics on board, ending a three-month in-cabin ban on devices for the Doha-based airline.

Total Plows Into Iran, Leaving Shell, BP on Sidelines
A diplomatic crisis in the Persian Gulf is adding another level of uncertainty for big oil companies looking to invest in Iran. The field contains 40 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers (3,745 square miles).

Iran calls missile attack on Syria militants a wider warning
Announcing the attack, the Guards insisted "many terrorists" were killed and their weapons were destroyed within the strike. Since Trump took office, his administration has put new economic sanctions on those allegedly involved with the program.

For his part, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said: "Turkey told us it will remain neutral from the crisis, and we hope they will stick to that position".

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, speaking at Chatham House in London on Wednesday, said the list is "demanding that we must surrender our sovereignty as the price for ending the siege".

Qatar is said to have sent a response to the demands formulated by the four countries whose next step has yet to be known.

The bloc has imposed limited sanctions on the small emirate after accusing the country "of supporting terrorism", and demanding among other things that the Al Jazeera TV network based in the Qatari capital Doha be closed down, that Qatar rethink its ties with Iran and that Turkey's military base in the country be closed. The meeting has to take place within five days after the call but will not be considered valid unless a minimum of four members attend it. "We are states of sovereignty, and we have the right to take any measures in line with global law", the Saudi Foreign Minister elaborated. Iran also called the Saudi-led economic blockade of Qatar unacceptable and called for diplomatic steps to defuse the crisis, while promising to provide air, sea and land support to its "brother" country.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi spoke with US President Donald Trump by telephone about Qatar, Sisi's office said on Wednesday. "If it requests us to leave, we will not stay where we are not wanted", he said through an interpreter, adding there had been no such request.

Qatar had earlier responded to the deadline with defiance, calling the demands "unrealistic and is not actionable".
