Judge rules Charlie Gard can't die at home

Judge rules Charlie Gard can't die at home

Not his parents' home, as they had wanted.

Great Ormond Street Hospital said it was not practical to provide life-support treatment for days at the couple's home.

The judge also warned that leaking the date, time or place of Charlie's death would be breaking the law. Her father said they have done extensive research about her condition, and they want a second opinion before they let go of their little girl.

Such arrangements will be hard to make, meaning the 11-month-old who has captured the world's attention will likely have his life support removed at a hospice.

Connie Yates, mother of critically ill baby Charlie Gard arrives at the Royal Court of Justice in London, Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

However, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) bosses said Charlie should stay at a hospice for a shorter period and expressed doubt over the proposed care arrangements. But the hospital "has suggested that he should be removed from life support within hours of being transferred to a hospice". Every day, parents with a seriously ill child in intensive care units, emergency rooms and other pediatric care facilities make heart-rending decisions to withdraw life-sustaining technology.

Charlie suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease, and can not breathe unassisted.

The couple abandoned their legal fight on Monday after concluding that Charlie had deteriorated to the "point of no return".

The case has resonated far and wide, triggering a heated debate about who should decide a child's fate and drawing comment from US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.

He said: "We know (Charlie) is not in pain and suffering, so to set the bar so high that he needs this specialist with him 24/7 is setting a massive hurdle that is totally unnecessary". The test will be whether Judge Nicholas Francis is convinced it's in the child's best interest, as British law requires.

Bobby Schindler, brother of Terri Schiavo who has been in London assisting the Gard family with their court case, agreed.

Michio Hirano, MD, chief of the division of neuromuscular disorders and director of the H. Houston Merritt Clinical Research Center at New York City-based Columbia University Medical Center, traveled to London last week to examine Charlie and determine if he may be a candidate for an experimental treatment. "Charlie Gard is a victim of a culture of medical indifference that turned out to be as corrosive and ultimately lethal as was his underlying genetic condition".
