Indian woman attacked with acid 5th time

Indian woman attacked with acid 5th time

The 35-year-old mother, who was allegedly gangraped in 2008 over a property dispute, was at a women's hostel in Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow when a man scaled the walls and poured the chemical onto her. The victim is in serious condition and is undergoing treatment in trauma centre.

Yesterday between 8-9pm acid was thrown at her while she stepped out of her hostel to fill water from a hand-pump.

The latest attack on her ignited widespread condemnation, with critics blaming the Adityanath government for what they said was a virtual breakdown of law and order in Uttar Pradesh. However, U.P. CM Yogi Adityanath had earlier given a cheque of Rs. one lakh as compensation to the victim's husband. In 2012, some people attacked her with a knife. There are injuries to the right side of her face.

She has faced three acid attacks in the past for pursuing court cases against two who allegedly gang-raped her in 2008.

On March 23 this year, the woman had submitted a written complaint to the government railway police at Charbagh station alleging that acid had been forced down her throat on board the Allahabad-Lucknow Ganga Gomti Express.

About Saturday night's incident, Jai Narain Singh, the inspector-general of the Lucknow range, said she had not named anyone but two persons from Rae Bareli whom she had named after the March attack had been taken into custody. The two men are facing trials over all the attacks, but they were released on bail in April.

Lucknow Additional Director General of Police Abhay Kumar Prasad has been quoted by reports as saying: "She was outside her hostel when someone came and threw acid on her".

The attack took place despite a round-the-clock police protection and the presence of an armed guard inside the hostel. She was standing near the washroom at the Shramjeevi Hostel and was talking on her phone when she was allegedly attacked, sources said. On Saturday she was again attacked with acid for the 5th time. UP minister for women welfare Rita Bahuguna Joshi termed the incident as unfortunate and assured a thorough probe and action against the accused.

Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh slammed the Yogi Adityanath government after Saturday's attack.
