California wildfires prompt thousands to evacuate, state of emergency

California wildfires prompt thousands to evacuate, state of emergency

Almost 8,000 people are evacuated from their homes Monday, as dry conditions fuel more than a dozen wildfires in California. But he kept in place water-reporting requirements, as well as bans on practices such as irrigating residential lawns during or following rainfall and hosing off sidewalks, which some state residents prefer to sweeping.

When Chuck Wilsey was ordered to evacuate this weekend as a wildfire roared near his ranch home in Oroville, California, he was ready.

The weather forecast for the fire area on Monday is moderate by fire behavior standards. The fire is estimated to have burned 500 acres with zero percent containment. Over 4,000 residents were evacuated in the area.

The largest of the fires now raging in California is the Alamo fire in San Luis Obispo County, which grew to cover nearly 24,000 acres (97.12 square km) from more than 19,000 acres (76.89 Square km) Saturday afternoon. The larger of the two charred more than 45 square miles (116 square kilometres) of dry brush and threatened more than 130 rural homes.

Firefighters built containment lines around half of a wildfire that has forced hundreds to evacuate near Breckenridge, Colorado, since breaking out on Wednesday. It has burned more than 14,000 acres and is 11 percent contained.

More than 3,500 people had fled the Whittier fire in Santa Barbara County that started on Saturday afternoon as temperatures hit a sizzling 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius), officials said.

In Arizona, rain has helped firefighters working a wildfire in mountains overlooking Tucson while also creating unsafe conditions for the crews.

Even though California's crippling drought finally ended in April, fire season is still expected to be bad this summer because it's been so hot.

The fires come just under a year after Californians faced terrifying "firenadoes" - some of which, officials suspected, were caused by arsonists.

The Whittier Fire was very active all day Sunday and into the evening and as of 10:30 p.m. a mapping aircraft observed intense heat along most of the perimeter.
