Bethanie Mattek-Sands screams for help after horrific Wimbledon injury

At present Mattek-Sands is in hospital following her devastating injury, described by medical examiners as "acute".

A scary scene at Court 17 halted play at Wimbledon on July 6.

Mattek-Sands- who was born in Minnesota, lived in Wisconsin and now calls Arizona home with her husband Justin - thought about quitting tennis years ago after a series of injuries.

United States tennis star Bethanie Mattek-Sands has suffered a horrific knee injury during her second round singles match at Wimbledon overnight.

Mattek-Sands stayed down in the middle of Court 17 and was attended to by medical personnel. When she was taken out of the field, she said, "It hurts, it hurts so much". "Her knee was in a very weird position,"Cirstea recalls later of what she saw". I've never seen anything like this.

Her opponent Cirstea was left with the magnitude of the incident.

Mattek-Sands had to be taken off the court on a stretcher and was immediately transported to a hospital.

"Many spectators had been visibly shaken by the events", says the Daily Telegraph. It's just about her being healthy; I know what she has been through with the injuries.

"I was anxious about, maybe, our safety, to be honest", Riske said.

"I think someone has to take the video and actually time and see how long it took for people to get there".

"Here, it took a while. Of course you wonder what happen if it was a heart issue or something like this".

"So, yeah, I hope is not as bad that it seemed, and she can have a quick, quick recovery".

Wimbledon officials suggested Cirstea may not have had an accurate sense of time while she helped comfort Mattek-Sands.

Mattek-Sands was tied with Cirsea, at one set apiece, as the game headed into the third set at the All England Club.
