Another survey shows Republican support fading from higher education

Another survey shows Republican support fading from higher education

A majority of Republicans and GOP-leaning respondents to the poll - 58 percent - "say that colleges and universities have a negative effect on the country, up from 45% previous year", Pew reported.

The gap between how Republicans and Democrats view American education systems has grown even wider in recent years, a new study published Monday by the Pew Research Center reveals.

While 55 percent of Americans overall have a positive view of colleges/universities, 58 percent of Republicans hold a negative attitude - a stunning 13-point change from 2016 and 21-point change from 2015, according to Pew.

You can view the full survey findings here. However, Democrats have a different dynamic than Republicans when income is factored in, with wealthier respondents viewing higher education more positively than their lower-income peers.

According to the poll, 58 percent of Republican respondents stated institutions of higher learning have negative effect on the country, a significant increase from the 45 percent who responded the same way past year.

73 percent of Republicans say churches and religious organizations have a positive effect compared with 50 percent of Democrats.

As most Republicans see it, the nation's colleges and universities - the hallowed halls of academia, as is were - do far more harm than good to America and its students.

Pew's survey showing 36 percent of Democrats viewing churches as having a negative impact on society comes a month after former Democratic presidential hopeful and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders attacked a Trump Administration appointee over his Christian views. And 46 percent of Republicans making less than $30,000 gave higher education positive marks.

The overall public viewpoint nearly exactly meets the middle of the two opposing political sides, with 55% believing that the colleges help the US. For example, Republicans have much more negative views of the press than Democrats, while Democrats have greater faith in labor unions. That ratio shifted to 43 percent positive and 45 percent negative a year ago.

Eighty-five percent of Republicans have a negative view of the national news media compared to 44 percent of Democrats. The views expressed in these articles are the author's own and do not necessarily reflect Mint Press News editorial policy.
