White House denies Trump wants Mueller out, but heat's on

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday he's seen no basis for firing Robert Mueller, the former FBI director he appointed as special counsel to oversee an investigation into potential coordination between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Ruddy said the ethics behind Mueller's presence are concerning considering how he was appointed to be special counsel. As Rosenstein went on to say, "I've been a prosecutor for 27 years, we don't want people talking publicly about the subjects of ongoing investigations". US Justice Department regulations outline that a special counsel can be fired by the US attorney general "for cause".

But Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told a Senate appropriations subcommittee on Tuesday that "there is no secret plan [to remove Mueller] that involves me", USA Today reports.

On May 17, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein named Mueller to oversee the Russian Federation probe and possible connection between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation. Comey then said he requested that Sessions never again leave him alone with President Trump. There is increasing concern at the White House and among Trump supporters that the investigation could overshadow the president's agenda for months to come.

"The Special Counsel may be disciplined or removed from office only by the personal action of the Attorney General", the Code of Federal Regulation states. "I do believe it would be catastrophic, and I do believe it would destroy any shred of trust in the president's judgment that remains over here", Senator Dianne Feinstein said.

Rosenstein was likely referring to the possibility that Mueller would investigate whether Sessions violated his recusal or whether Comey's firing was an effort to obstruct justice. Sessions recused himself from investigations related to the Trump campaign in February, a move that also provoked Trump's ire.

Ruddy is Trump's old friend, who often consults him.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told reporters Tuesday that he had confidence in Mueller and called reports that Trump might fire Mueller "rumors".

Ryan said the smartest thing for the president to do would be to let the investigation continue and be vindicated.

Mueller was appointed Federal Bureau of Investigation director by President George W. Bush in 2001 and served until 2013, when James Comey took over as head.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday that Ruddy did not speak with Trump about firing Mueller as special counsel and other White House aides suggested the Newsmax CEO was only speaking for himself.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel". The attorney general, Elliot Richardson, resigned rather than doing so, putting the onus on deputy attorney general William Ruckelshaus, who also chose to resign. He fired FBI Director James Comey, as he told NBC newsman Lester Holt, because of the Russian Federation investigation.

Earlier this week, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich reportedly told radio host John Catsimatidis that Congress should "abolish the independent counsel".
