US soldiers killed by Afghan soldier; Taliban takes credit for attack

The shooting occurred in an Islamic State-infested district in eastern Afghanistan where the U.S.is actively engaged in operations against the nascent terrorist group.

A Taliban spokesman claimed the shooter was a part of the militant group and had killed four Americans and injured several more, but this has yet to be confirmed by government sources. The shooting took place a few hours after an American airstrike in southern Helmand Province accidentally killed two Afghan policemen.

Such insider attacks have happened before in Afghanistan.

A U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan said: "We are aware of an incident in Eastern Afghanistan". The President and I have been briefed, the details of this attack are forthcoming. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of American heroes". Reports indicate the rangers were shot and killed by an Afghan soldier.

The soldiers were killed in an apparent insider, or so-called "green-on-blue", attack by an Afghan ally soldier on us service members.

There are now 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan training, advising and assisting the Afghanistan army.

Read: What Is The GBU-43 Bomb?

The three previous US soldiers' deaths in Achin make up the entirety of USA combat fatalities in Afghanistan in 2017. Achin is home to between 600 and 800 Islamic fighters according to the Associated Press. Dubbed the "Mother Of All Bombs", the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast was unleashed in combat for the first time April 12, hitting IS positions in a remote area of eastern Nangarhar province. The weapon was packed with 11 tons of explosive and was aimed at destroying an ISIS tunnel.

Local media reported at least two deaths, while the Reuters news agency quoted Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the Helmand governor, as saying that three officers had lost their lives and two were wounded.

"During an ANDSF [Afghan National Defense and Security Forces] and US partnered operation, fires resulted in the deaths and injuries to members of the Afghan Border Police", it noted. The larger of the two, known as Resolute Support, is focused on advising and assisting Afghan security forces with the goal of enabling them to independently protect the country's populace from a resilient Taliban.
