Trump White House Reportedly Proceeding To Reverse Obama-Era Punishment of Russian Federation

Trump White House Reportedly Proceeding To Reverse Obama-Era Punishment of Russian Federation

The Trump administration is considering allowing Russian officials to return to two diplomatic compounds in NY and Maryland after the Obama administration ejected the Russians from the compounds as part of US sanctions after Russia meddled in the 2016 election, according to a Washington Post report published Wednesday evening.

The compounds were bought by the Soviet government last century.

R.C. Hammond, senior communications adviser for the State Department, told the newspaper in a statement that "The U.S. and Russian Federation have reached no agreements". Sources told the outlet that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said, in a Washington, D.C., meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, that return of the compounds would not be contingent upon consulate construction.

The Trump White House is reportedly seriously considering allowing Russian Federation to resume its use of two diplomatic facilities that were shuttered during the final weeks of the Obama administration in December 2016.

Without the protection, US law enforcement can investigate it like any other stateside structure, according to the Washington Post. "Before making a final decision on allowing the Russians to reoccupy the compounds, the administration is examining possible restrictions on Russian activities there, including removing the diplomatic immunity the properties previously enjoyed", the report said.

President Barack Obama had charged the compounds - one near New York City and the other on Maryland's Eastern Shore - were being "used by Russian personnel for intelligence-related purposes" and gave Russia 24 hours to vacate them. Besides that, United States authorities expelled 35 Russian diplomats and shut down two Russian compounds in NY and Maryland. "They know full well that those two facilities they mentioned, they are vacation facilities for our kids and this is Christmas, and this is vacation time for our schools". The Obama administration characterized the properties as such when it revoked Russian ownership in late December as part of broader sanctions related to the election meddling.
