May Sets Up Meeting With Irish "Kingmakers"

May Sets Up Meeting With Irish

Despite such assurances, with several supporters of hard Brexit in parliament unseated in favour of those with a softer stance, it now looks like the next government may be forced to pursue a deal which retains more of Britain's ties with the EU.

After deciding to stay on as British PM despite the disastrous election results, Theresa May on Monday unveiled a largely unchanged new cabinet, which met for the first time in the day.

The most high-profile challenger who could succeed May is Boris Johnson, the former London mayor and current foreign secretary.

"I hope that together we will continue to build on the progress that we have made in previous Parliaments to fight against discrimination in all its forms, and make our politics more representative of the people we serve".

The DUP leader declined to give details of what she termed a "positive engagement with the Conservative Party", but said she would be travelling to London late on Monday for discussions with her team of 10 MPs before a meeting with Mrs May at Downing Street on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Denmark's finance minister said he hoped the outcome of the British election would lead to a pause to rethink the direction in which the Brexit negotiations were heading."After the general election it is very unclear to know exactly what the United Kingdom approach to Brexit now will be", Kristian Jensen said.German Foreign Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, speaking at a financial conference in Berlin, said his government was aiming for a Brexit deal that would limit negative consequences for the bloc but nor did it want to weaken Britain.

It was thought the Brexit-supporting Mrs Foster was seeking assurances from Mrs May that she will pursue a softer exit from the European Union as part of her demands.

In the briefing they said the prospect of an agreement between the Conservative Party and the DUP was causing "anxiety and fear" over fears that any deal agreed on would affect issues relating to Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has said the priority of Brexit talks should be the economy and free trade and that other parties should be involved in negotiations.

In a reflection of her newfound humility, May managed a joke at her own expense as Britain's House of Commons got underway in the first sitting after Thursday's general election.

Justices could consider fight over electoral maps
He says Democrats proved in court that their rights were violated and "now this story will be told on a national stage". The Supreme Court has never struck down a state redistricting plan on the basis of a partisan gerrymander.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove declined to deny the reports when pressed, but told Sky News that the reality of the election result meant that May and her government would need to reach beyond party lines.

"Going overseas and being seen to be the prime minister and talking to the president of France... is a classic move to shore up authority at home", said Colin Talbot, professor of government at the University of Manchester.

It could also be the place for May "to change her position on Brexit", he added. Michael Gove, who challenged May in a bid to succeed David Cameron as leader previous year, is back in the cabinet. The Conservatives won 318 out of 650 seats.

Theresa May makes heartfelt appeal to Tory MPs to remain Prime Minister and "get us out of" this mess.

Arlene Foster, the DUP leader, faced criticism last May for meeting Jackie McDonald, the leader of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). "Talks are going well".

Tory MP says of her speech: "There was none of the Maybot".

DUP leader Arlene Foster has hit back at claims her party's policy on gay rights are homophobic, calling the accusation "complete and utter nonsense".

The DUP is also far more socially conservative than the Conservatives.

But any deal between the DUP and the Tories could worsen tension in Northern Ireland and open the door to a referendum on unity with Ireland.
