Julian Edelman and the Patriots are reportedly close on a contract extension

Julian Edelman and the Patriots are reportedly close on a contract extension

The New England Patriots and wide receiver Julian Edelman agreed to a multiyear contract extension Thursday that should keep him with the team for the remainder of his prime. NFL Network had reported earlier that the sides were close to an agreement.

Edelman has earned $14,374,375 since the beginning of the 2013 season. He accumulated a 98-1,106-3 stat line while averaging 11.3 YPC and 69.1 YPG.

It appears the Patriots are rewarding Edelman for his contributions over the years where he's been significantly under paid, although we won't know for sure until the contract details come out.

SEC tweaks graduate transfer rules, opening door for Zaire
The reason for the wait is to see what potential policies an NCAA transfer working group recommends on the issue. An approved rule change at SEC spring meetings could mean a Texas quarterback target is headed to Florida.

With starting quarterback Tom Brady getting up their in age, getting the ball out quickly is immensely important for the Patriots passing game.

Edelman, whose diving catch in Super Bowl LI was a signature play in the Patriots' comeback victory against Atlanta, had signed a four-year contract extension with a maximum value of $19 million in 2014. Say he gets injured this season, his stock would drop considerably, as who would want to pay a 32-year-old free agent receiver coming off an injury who is already injury-prone as it is?

He was selected by New England in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, No. 232 overall. He caught 21 passes for 342 yards and a touchdown in the postseason during the Patriots' path to another championship. He's not the most skilled player on the New England roster, but Edelman is one of the more impactful players.
